Badami is a historically important town that served as the capital of the Badami Chalukyas in the 6th century. The Badami Rejuvenation Competition aims to revive the town’s rich history through responsive and sustainable redesign. The program requirement was to redesign the main street of Badami. This would act as the central spine that sets off a ripple effect of development, improving the lives of the dwellers and increasing tourist potential. One of the main problems that the project aims to solve is to create for Badami its own identity as a longer-term tourist destination, rather than a one-day trip.
We approached the project with an in-depth immersion in the town. Through oral histories of its residents and tourists, we determined our problem statement. We arrived at the theme ”ConServe | ConVerse: Humans in Harmony with Heritage.” The idea was to sustain the authenticity of Badami’s spatial experience and help initiate a community-based rejuvenation program.

Badami has a settlement of skilled craftspeople, including weavers of traditional Ilkal sarees. We tapped into the potential for the crafts industry to form a cornerstone of the Badami economy. This would also add to the project of making Badami a tourist magnet, encouraging visitors to stay with the local weavers and learn the craft. The traditional houses of the town are exquisite, but unfortunately, either dilapidated or being replaced by concrete structures.
We came up with contemporary solutions to rebuild and repair these homes, both for the residents’ needs and to be used as homestays for visitors. Sanitation facilities and other public structures were designed to be held in partnership between the local residents and the government, allowing a level of ownership and control with the natives.

Besides meeting competition objectives, we aimed to create an enterprising community ecosystem by generating meaningful and sustainable livelihoods for the local community. The proposed system of solutions is environmentally responsible, sustainable, scalable and adaptable in principle, not only in the context of Badami, but also other heritage city projects in India.
