KIAL Retail Plaza

BIAL Retail Plaza
The KIAL Plaza challenge was to design a striking retail complex that would attract visitors in the middle of a busy complex where throngs of people move in a time-bound manner.

This design was an entry to an invited design competition to develop a retail plaza abutting the airport concourse at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru.  The brief called for a unique, innovative, aspirational and engaging consumer interface providing a diversified offering retail, food & beverage, leisure and entertainment plus essential traveller services.

The challenge was to design a striking retail complex that would attract visitors in the middle of a busy complex where throngs of people move in a time-bound manner.

The response was to develop a hexagonal retail module with a striking roof form, where the public paths and spaces between modules would be covered by a lattice structure that threw striking shadow patterns.  The layout of the modules was derived from observation of movement patterns at the site, with the main paths in the retail plaza located to accommodate the way people naturally moved between the airport terminal and the parking areas.
